Setting Up Your Scope

Scope tells LithicBlue what the project needs to answer. You break the work into sections and the requirements within them; LithicBlue then tracks how well your sources fulfil each one.

The Scope tab tracks how well your sources fulfil each section's requirements.

Start from a proposal, or from scratch

When you create a project with Quick Start, LithicBlue extracts an initial scope from the proposal or scope-of-work document you upload, so you begin with a draft to refine. You can also build the scope yourself. Either way, you edit it on the project's Scope tab.

Define sections and requirements

On the Scope tab, switch from Report to Edit. Scope is organised in two levels:

  • Sections: the major areas of the engagement.
  • Requirements: within each section, the specific questions the project must answer. Each requirement is phrased as a research question.
  1. Add sections and, under each, the requirements it needs.
  2. Write each requirement as a clear research question; that's what LithicBlue researches against your sources.
  3. Click Save scope. Saving automatically kicks off the analysis that fills in each requirement from your documents.

Let AI draft it

If you'd rather not start from a blank page, use the AI helpers in Edit mode to generate a first set of questions, then tidy them up.

After you save

Once analysis has run, switch back to Report to read fulfilment section by section: see Checking progress against scope. Whatever your sources can't yet answer shows up as data gaps.
